About the Author of the Site
Hello — I’m Élise Dupont. I live for wind-whipped cliffs, hidden beaches and long hikes that end with a view, and I created Hillside Durness Co to share everything I’ve learned exploring the far north of Scotland. I write from the heart of Durness and bring a local’s curiosity and a traveler’s practical sense to every guide and story on this site.
I’m a travel writer, photographer and outdoor enthusiast with years of experience backpacking the Highlands, scouting coastal walks, and documenting wildlife and cultural encounters. My background combines field research, trekking guide experience, and a love for slow travel—so my posts mix route details, safety tips, and the little discoveries that make a trip unforgettable.
On this blog I cover Coastal Walks, Hiking Routes, Wildlife, Local Culture, Travel Tips and Photo Spots. Expect step-by-step walk descriptions, difficulty and timing estimates, wildlife-spotting hints, places to stay and eat, and photography advice to help you capture Durness’s dramatic light and landscapes.
I care deeply about responsible travel. I’ll help you enjoy remote beaches and fragile habitats while minimizing impact: leave-no-trace practices, seasonal considerations for wildlife, and guidance on respecting local communities and land access rules.
When I’m not mapping a new route or testing gear, I’m often chatting with crofters, artisans and rangers to bring you insider perspectives on local culture and traditions—from sea-foraging and Gaelic place names to historic sites and community events.
I publish practical travel tips for planning your visit—best times to go, transport options, packing essentials, and safety advice for coastal and mountain terrain. I aim to make Durness accessible to nature lovers of all levels, whether you’re after gentle beach strolls or multi-day Highland adventures.
I photograph everything I write about and include photo spot recommendations so you can find the best compositions and light. If you follow me here, you’ll get honest gear notes, route updates, and evocative images to inspire your next escape.
If you have questions, story ideas or want tailored route advice, I’d love to hear from you. Join me in discovering Durness—its cliffs, its hidden coves, and the wild beauty that keeps me coming back. — Élise
